Repair or Replace? A Quick Guide to Your Cracked Windshield

A rock hits your windshield on 76, or you walk out to your car and there's a crack that wasn't there yesterday. The first question is always the same: do I need a repair, or a full replacement?

Here's the short answer: if the damage is smaller than a quarter and away from the edges, it can usually be repaired in under 30 minutes. If it's larger, spreading, or near the edge of the glass, you'll need a full replacement. Below is exactly how to tell which one you're dealing with.

When a repair is enough

A windshield chip or small crack qualifies for repair if it meets all of these:

  • Smaller than a quarter (about 1 inch across)

  • Not in your direct line of sight (the driver's viewing area)

  • At least 2 inches from the edge of the windshield

  • Not a "spider" crack with multiple lines branching out

Repairs are quick, affordable, and stop the damage from spreading. Most mobile technicians including our team  can do this in your driveway or parking lot in under half an hour.

When you need a full replacement

You need a replacement if:

  • The crack is longer than 2 inches

  • The damage is directly in your line of sight (even a small chip here can distort your vision and isn't safe to just "repair over")

  • The crack reaches the edge of the windshield edge cracks compromise the glass's structural integrity

  • There are multiple chips or cracks

  • Your windshield has ADAS cameras or sensors built in and the damage is anywhere near them

Why the edge matters so much

Your windshield isn't just glass  it's a structural part of your car. In a rollover accident, a properly installed windshield helps keep the roof from caving in. A crack near the edge weakens that structural role, which is why edge damage almost always means replacement, not repair, even if the crack looks small.

What about ADAS cameras?

If your car is a 2018 model or newer, there's a good chance it has forward-facing cameras or sensors mounted near the windshield for features like lane-departure warning or automatic emergency braking. Any windshield replacement on these vehicles requires ADAS recalibration afterward  otherwise those safety systems can misread the road. We cover this in more detail in our ADAS calibration article, but the short version: always ask your installer if recalibration is included.
